A complete rewrite was started which has now been completed and is in the process of being deployed. This talk will cover an update since the last presentation (JLAB fall '97) and include information on things we have learned. The user base several years from now will include not only today's Windows 95 population but also many physics users. This latter group is relatively new to Windows and are setting many new demands on our well-established NICE service. In my presentation I will show the installation of a Linux desktop PC and how we want to support and maintain such a grou pof distributed PCs. At DESY Zeuthen we use SuSE Linux 5.2 with some automatic installation and CFENGINE (with SUE) for the postinstallation. For regular checking we use PATROL. Then it will present the overall infrastructure of DESY Zeuthen's automated systems post installation and daily adminis- tration environment. The talk will close with the status of the project and concrete plans for the near future. 09:30 - 10:00 JLab Common User Environment Site: Jefferson Lab Speaker: 10:00 - 10:20 Sloan Digital Sky Survey compute model Site: FERMI Speaker: Chris Stoughton 10:20 - 10:40 Coffee 10:40 - 11:00 Handling requests with a trouble ticket system at DESY Zeuthen Site: DESY Speaker: Wolfgang Friebel Abstract: While DESY is using a very powerful trouble ticket system (Remedy), the estimated amount of administration and the heavily GUI based access to the system made the system less attractive to a small site like Zeuthen. Based on the req/reqng tools we experimented with a much simpler solution, that offers both command line, email based and GUI/WWW interfaces. Still under development, the tool is in routine use since May 98. An interface to remedy is planned. 11:00 - 12:00 Year2K Issues Site: FERMI Speaker: Tim Doody 12:00 - 13:30 Lunch 13:30 - 14:00 New Features in PATROL 3.2 Site: DESY Authors: Michael Jung, Waltraut Niepraschk Speaker: Wolfgang Friebel Abstract: The monitoring tool patrol was developed at SLAC to recognize problems on UNIX machines as quickly as possible. Based on a recent version, that makes use of the object structures in perl5, the functionality of patrol was extended for the requirements at DESY. Patrol is capable of monitoring processes, deamons, file systems, files, ports and checking return codes of system commands. A WWW interface has been developed for patrol, that also maintains a history of the patrol findings. The use of patrol at DESY led to a larger overall stability of centrally managed machines. 14:00 - 14:20 KTeV compute model presentation Site: FERMI Speaker: Vivian O'Dell / Elliot Cheu 14:20 - 14:50 Deployment of Java Development Infrastructure at CERN Site: CERN Speaker: Miguel Marquina Abstract: CERN undertook last May a survey aimed to collect the requirements of the Java Developer community concerning the provision of some centralized Java Development facilities.
