Accelerator Update for May 16, 2008 - May 19, 2008

 

Friday May 16

The day shift began with Operations monitoring Tevatron (TeV) store 6142 (93.85E30) and the Recycler stash (211.1E10), with the Antiproton Source (Pbar) stacking (15.2E10), with the Main Injector, Booster, and Linac operating normally, with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and DZero (D0) using the colliding beams, and with the NuMI, SciBooNE / MiniBooNE (BNB), and the Meson MTest experiments taking beam.

At 8:13 AM, a Linac Klystron RF station (KRF3) tripped off.

At 8:40 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 8:46 AM, LRF2 tripped off. It reset.

At 9:25 AM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 10:04 AM, Operations reported that experts had found a problem with the TeV power supply filter dump cabinet at the TeV sector A2 service building. They will formulate a repair plan.

At 10:05 AM, a Booster vacuum pump (IPRF17) tripped off and caused BRF7 & 8 to also trip off. Everything reset.

Operations terminated store 6142 at 10:43 AM. Experts began work on the TeV sector A2 power supply problem.

A CUB expert reported at 10:47 AM that he was taking column #3 offline for regeneration.

A Switchyard (SY) expert reported at 10:51 AM that he had updated a SY file that increased the slow spill extraction efficiency to Meson from 75% to 95%.

At 10:52 AM, LRF2 tripped off for the first of five times in 15 minutes. It reset.

At 11:26 AM, a Booster kicker (B:MKS08) tripped off and would not reset. Operators adjusted the kickers MKS04-07 to balance the system.

Operations prepared D0, CDF, and the TeV for an access at 11:26 AM.

Operations reported at 11:35 AM that the following TeV jobs would be conducted:

  • A2 power supply repair
  • D0 QPM reboot
  • D3 power supply shunt repair
  • E35 VFC chassis swap
  • VF29 faulty status
  • C3 vacuum pump repair
  • A-E oxygen monitor change outs
  • F4 and B2 wet engine inspections
  • E1TDIE repair

Operations reported at 11:44 AM that they had rebooted the Meson Multiwire front-end (FE).

Booster experts reported at noon that MKS08 was repaired.

At 12:43 PM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

CDF came out of access at 12:57 PM.

At 1:10 PM, LRF3 tripped off. It reset.

TeV A-E sectors came out of access at 1:36 PM.

Power supply experts reported at 1:45 PM that they had completed their work on the TeV sector A2 power supply.

At 2:18 PM, the NuMI horn tripped off. It reset.

At 3:13 PM, Operations reported that the air temperature in the MI-21 area was warm. The Duty Mechanic investigated and reported that the air conditioner wasn’t working. He had it up and operating within 10 minutes.

Operations put the TeV through a 980 GeV ramp at 3:24 PM.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 3:39 PM.

At 3:49 PM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 3:57 PM that the Recycler had stashed antiprotons five times during the day shift.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 5:15 PM.

Operations disabled beam to MTest at 5:17 PM.

At 5:58 PM, the TeV suffered a sector F4 quench. Operators found that the TeV closure program had set a trim magnet power supply (HT708) too high and it tripped off on injection. An expert investigated and readjusted several trim currents.

At 6:04 PM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 6:52 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 7:46 PM.

Operations established store 6146 at 9:30 PM with an initial luminosity of 252.27E30.

At 9:48 PM, KRF5 & 6 tripped off. They both reset.

Operations reported at 11:59 PM that the Recycler had stashed three times during the evening shift.

Saturday May 17

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6146 (157.03E30) and the stash (132.8E10), with Pbar stacking (31.5E10), and with NuMI and BNB taking beam.

At 12:31 AM, a Booster vacuum pump (IPRF23) tripped off and caused BRF13 & 14 to trip off. This happened twice within 30 minutes. Everything reset.

At 3:49 AM, the NuMI beam permit tripped off when a quadrupole power supply (E:QD120) tripped off. Everything reset.

At 3:52 AM, Operations reported that a Linac quadrupole power supply (QPS106) was not regulating properly. Operators swapped around a number of regulator control cards without success. Operations called in a Linac expert.

Operations established beam to MTest at 6:25 AM.

At 6:48 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 6:56 AM, KRF5 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 8 AM that the Recycler had stashed four times during the midnight shift.

At 8:32 AM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 8:54 AM, a Linac quadrupole power supply (QPS103) tripped off. It reset.

QPS103 tripped off at 9:08 AM. It reset.

Linac resumed sending beam at 9:17 AM.

At 10:01 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 11:06 AM, LR4 tripped off for the first of two times in six minutes. It reset.

At 11:22 AM, Operations reported problems communicating with the Recycler VSA. A power cycle resolved the problem.

At 11:25 AM, the Klystron vernier transformer tripped off on a LCW flow fault. It reset.

At 11:30 AM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 11:53 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Operations terminated store 6146 at 12:53 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 1:06 PM.

At 2:26 PM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:37 PM, LRF5 tripped off. It reset.

Operations established store 6147 at 2:54 PM with an initial luminosity of 272.61E30.

At 3:44 PM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 6:20 PM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Operations disabled beam to MTest at 6:50 PM.

Operations reported at 7:57 PM that the Recycler had stashed seven times during the last 12 hours.

At 9:07 PM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 9:27 PM, a Linac quadrupole (QPS120) began regulating poorly. Operators reseated its regulator card.

At 9:51 PM, Operations reported a Pbar LCW low resistivity alarm. Operators investigated and found that the Pbar Debuncher LCW had been making up a lot of water over the last day. Operators searched for leaks, but did not find any. Operations contacted experts.

At 11:04 PM, Operations reported that a TeV sector D3 air compressor tripped off. It reset.

At 11:56 PM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Sunday May18

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6147 and the stash, with Pbar stacking, and with NuMI and BNB taking beam.

At 12:39 AM, a Booster vacuum pump (IP61) tripped off. It reset.

Operations prepared Pbar for an access at 1:04 AM.

At 1:04 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Operators reported at 1:35 AM that they had found a leaking hose on a quadrupole magnet (D2Q5). Operations called in an expert who had the hose repaired by 3:15 AM. Another very small leak was found near the D/A line, but the expert could not find the right size cap to fix it. It will be fixed later.

Pbar resumed stacking at 3:38 AM.

Operations established beam to MTest around 6:15 AM.

At 6:57 AM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 7:58 AM, the Klystron vernier tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 8:04 AM that the Recycler had stashed six times during the last 12 hours.

Operations terminated store 6147 at 8:32 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 8:43 AM.

At 10:08 AM, the Klystron vernier tripped off. It reset.

Operations established store 6148 at 10:16 AM with an initial luminosity of 279.19E30.

At 10:26 AM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 10:49 AM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:55 PM, KRF6 tripped off. It reset.

At 3:26 PM, KRF3 tripped off. It reset.

At 4:59 PM, LRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 6:17 PM, the P1 transfer line beam permit tripped off due to a high current on a quadrupole power supply (I:Q701PI). Everything reset.

Operations disabled beam to MTest at 7:24 PM.

Operations reported at 7:53 PM that the Recycler had stashed seven times during the last 12 hours.

At 8:47 PM, LRF4 tripped off. It reset.

Monday May19

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6148 and the stash, with Pbar stacking, and with NuMI and BNB taking beam.

At 12:08 AM, the 400MeV area beam permit tripped off due to bad beam positions. KRF7 had gone out of phase. Everything reset.

Operations reported at 12:20 AM that the integrated luminosity for last week was 55.03 Pb-1, which was the second best week recorded.

Operations terminated store 6148 at 3:06 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 3:21 AM.

At 3:43 AM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset.

Operations established store 6149 at 4:43 AM with an initial luminosity of 280.6E30.

At 7:49 AM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 7:59 AM that the Recycler had stashed seven times during the last 12 hours.
