Accelerator Update for July 02, 2008 - July 07, 2008

 

Wednesday July 2

The day shift began with Operations monitoring the Tevatron (TeV) store 6258 (92.87E30) and the Recycler (RR) stash (~200.0E10), with the Antiproton Source stacking (~40.0E10), with the Main Injector, Booster, and Linac operating normally, with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and DZero (D0) using the colliding beams, and with the SciBooNE / MiniBooNE (BNB) experiments taking beam.

Two MI experts reported at 10:29 AM that they were tuning beam around the MI collimators.

At 10:41 AM, Operations reported a MI Watchdog trip on the 95˚ LCW system temperature. Operators investigated and found the supply and return temperatures stable. Operations reset the trip and tried to turn back on, but 2/3rds of the modulators tripped off. An expert investigated and turned everything back on except for one RF station (MIRF5). Operations resumed sending beam to Pbar. The expert reported that the modulator for MIRF5 was bad and would be replaced.

At 10:57 AM, MIRF13 tripped off for the first of three times in 24 minutes. It reset.

At 11:15 AM, the 400 MeV area tripped off due to bad beam positions. It reset.

An RF expert reported at 11:49 AM that MIRF5 was back online.

Operations terminated store 6258 at 1:08 PM.

Cryo system technicians reported at 1:21 PM that they had begun replacing the flywheel for the TeV sector B1 wet engine.

Operations prepared CDF and D0 for an access at 1:30 PM.

At 1:56 PM, LRF1 tripped off. It reset.

At 2 PM, a Preaccelerator expert accessed the I- Source dome to repair a stuck expansion valve.

At 2:08 PM, Operations reported that due to work on a TeV CAMAC crate ($D5), the TeV ramp tripped off on a sector D1 lead failure. Everything reset.

Operations reported at 2:47 PM that the I- Source work was completed. Pbar resumed stacking.

CDF came out of access at 3:06 PM.

D0 came out of access at 3:19 PM.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 4 PM.

Operations reported at 4:03 PM that the Recycler had stashed antiprotons five times during the day shift.

At 4:08 PM, the 400 MeV area tripped off due to bad beam positions. It reset.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 5:21 PM.

Operators reported at 6:38 PM that they had completed their search and secure of the NuMI decay pipe and the MINOS absorber areas.

Operations established store 6261 at 6:58 PM with an initial luminosity of 308.07E30.

At 7:20 PM, Operations reported that a NuMI power supply (HV101A) would not turn on. Operations called in two power supply experts to investigate.

At 7:21 PM, Operations reported that the TeV sector C4 water temperature was at 105˚ F. An expert was called in to investigate. Later, he reported that a pneumatic actuator for the temperature regulation valve had an air leak. The expert hand-set the valve to 94˚ F.

At 8:14 PM, the P1 transfer line beam permit tripped off for the first of three times in 15 minutes. Operators investigated and reported that a correction magnet power supply (I:H502) was not following its ramp.

Power supply experts reported at 10:37 PM that they had found and replaced a bad ground fault detection circuit for HV101A.

Operations reported at 11:09 PM that I:H502 had a bad 453 card. Pbar resumed stacking.

At 11:39 PM, LRF4 & 5 tripped off. The both reset.

Operations reported at midnight that the Recycler had stashed four times during the evening shift.

Thursday July 3

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6261 (145.02E30) and the stash (129.7E10), with Pbar stacking (27.0E10), and with BNB taking beam.

At 12:10 AM, a Linac Klystron RF station (KRF3) tripped off on a LCW flow fault. It reset.

At 7:51 AM, two Linac beam valves closed (VLNLAM and VLNDMP) and caused the beam to trip off. They both reset.

Operations reported at 8:01 AM that the Recycler had stashed six times during the midnight shift.

Operations reported at 9:31 AM that they had established beam to the NuMI target for target scans.

A water expert reported at 10:05 AM that they had installed a new regulator on the TeV sector C4 LCW system.

Operations terminated store 6261 at 11:04 AM.

With all the TeV heat exchanger work completed, Water technicians reported at 11:15 AM that they were turning off the TeV pond water and LCW pumps for sectors B3, C3, D3, and E3.

At 11:19 AM, operations reported that a Lambertson (LAM61) had tripped off on a ground fault indication. Operations contacted an expert.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup around 11:20 AM.

At 11:56 AM, a power supply expert reported that LAM61’s ground fault detector was not properly mounted in the power supply. This was also true for HV101A. Electrical support experts modified these mountings while NuMI was down.

At 12:45 PM, Operations reported that stacktail TWT #26 tripped off and caused a small spike in emittances. It reset.

Operations established store 6262 at 1:10 PM with an initial luminosity of 307.1E10.

NuMI experts resumed their target scans around 1:18 PM.

Water experts reported at 1:49 PM that they had completed water fills for the MI cavity and magnet LCW system.

Operators reported at 2:25 PM that they had searched and secured the Meson Test sections 1 & 2 (MT-6).

A Pbar expert made a target adjustment at 2:34 PM.

A Switchyard (SY) expert established beam to the Meson M01 absorber at 2:35 PM. Later, he established beam to the next MTest (T978 CALICE) experiment.

At 2:38 PM, Operations reported a significant LCW leak in the Booster East area near the low-level RF room. Experts investigated and reported that the leak was coming from the cooling system for the West Gallery Offices. To repair the leak, cooling ducts would have to be removed that would cut off cooling to critical Booster systems (such as the high-level RF, corrector supplies, and other equipment). Experts agree that they would valve out office cooling for the weekend and then assess the leak on Monday.

NuMI studiers reported at 3:32 PM that they had completed their target scan.

Operations prepared NuMI for access at 3:44 PM.

Operations reported at 4:02 PM that the Recycler had stashed four times during the day shift.

Operations disabled beam to MTest around 6 PM.

At 10:30 PM, the MI Power Supply interlock Loop (MI PSLOOP) tripped off. Operations contacted experts. This trip halted all MI beam.

Operations put Pbar into standby mode at 10:38 PM.

Experts reported at 11:23 PM that they had bypassed the MI-50 Quadrupole Bucholtz fast trip. Pbar resumed stacking.

Operations reported at midnight that the Recycler had stashed five times during the evening shift.

Friday July 4

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6262 (92.1E30) and the stash (269.1E10), with Pbar stacking (29.3E10), and with BNB taking beam.

At 2 AM, KRF1 & 2 tripped off. They reset.

At 2:12 AM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

At 4:46 AM, the TeV suffered a quench due to a beam permit ground fault indication. Operations called in experts.

Interlock experts reported at 5:38 AM that the system had seen a ground fault, but disappeared as they were tracing it.

Operations established beam to MTest at 6:31 AM.

Operations reported at 7:58 AM that the Recycler had stashed four times during the midnight shift.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 9:27 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 10:38 AM.

Operations established store 6265 at 12:17 PM with an initial luminosity of 310.7E30.

At 2:01 PM, Operations reported a MIRF Watchdog trip. All 18 RF stations tripped off. Everything reset.

At 2:12 PM, a TeV RF station (TRF1) tripped off. Operations contacted an expert.

Operations reported that MI resumed sending beam at 3:17 PM.

Operations reported at 4:04 PM that the Recycler had stashed two times during the day shift.

At 5:29 PM, LRF5 tripped off. It reset.

Operations disabled beam to MTest at 6:04 PM.

At 8:48 PM, LRF3 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at midnight that the Recycler had stashed six times during the evening shift.

Saturday July 5

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6265 (79.08E30) and the stash (357.7E10), with Pbar stacking (13.7E10), and with BNB taking beam.

Operations terminated store 6265 at 2:19 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 2:34 AM. Operators turned on TRF1.

At 3:26 AM, the MI RF Watchdog tripped off. The low and mid-level RF tripped off as well at the damper system. Everything reset.

At 4:35 AM, LRF3 tripped off. Operators investigated and reported a LCW leak from inside of the modulator. Operations called in a Linac expert.

Operations established store 6266 at 5:01 AM with an initial luminosity of 318.49E30. This store set a New Luminosity Record.

Operations reported at 5:16 AM that they had put MI into an energy conservation mode during the LRF3 repairs.

At 6:58 AM, the TeV store 6266 aborted on a sector C3 vacuum indication. Operations investigated and could not find a vacuum problem. Operations contacted experts.

Operations reported at 7:44 AM that they replaced a TeV vacuum pump power supply (IP4) at sector C3.

The Linac expert reported at 7:53 AM that he had replaced a bad LCW hose on LRF3.

Operations reported at 8:01 AM that the Recycler had stashed two times during the midnight shift.

Operations established beam to MTest at 9:09 AM.

At 9:39 AM, BRF16 tripped off. It reset.

At 9:46 AM, the SY beam permit tripped off due to a low voltage fault on S:VTF18X. MTest experimenter will take lower intensity beam until the problem gets fixed.

A TeV expert began a study at 9:49 AM.

An expert reported at 11:47 AM that he had replaced a 15-volt power supply at TeV sector F1. MTest resumed taking beam.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 12:30 PM.

Operations put the TeV through a wet squeeze at 1:36 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 3:47 PM.

At 4:32 PM, KRF5 tripped off. It reset.

At 4:34 PM, the TeV suffered a sector E48 quench. One transfer of antiprotons was lost.

At 6:13 PM, Operations reported a MI RF watchdog trip for the first of five times in two minutes. After the last trip, Operations rebooted the MI RF system and the dampers.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 7:28 PM.

Operations reported at 8 PM that the Recycler had stashed six times during the last 12 hours.

Operations put the TeV through a wet squeeze at 9:20 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 10:03 PM.

Operations established store 6271 at 11:57 PM with an initial luminosity of 214.25E30.

Sunday July 6

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6271 and the stash, with Pbar stacking, and with BNB taking beam.

At 1:43 AM, MIRF17 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 4:38 AM that operators added water to the MS2LCW system.

At 4:39 AM, KRF6 tripped off for the first of two times in about 45 minutes. It reset.

Operations reported at 7:58 AM that the Recycler had stashed eight times during the last 12 hours.

Operations terminated store 6271 around 1:27 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 1:34 PM.

Operations established store 6272 at 3:08 PM with an initial luminosity of 285.86E30.

Operations reported at 7:56 PM that the Recycler had stashed seven times during the last 12 hours.

At 8:54 PM, KRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 9:28 PM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations disabled the MTest beam at 9:34 PM.

Monday July 7

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6272 and the stash, with Pbar stacking, and with BNB taking beam.

Operations terminated store 6272 at 6:05 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 6:16 AM.

Operations established store 6273 at 7:58 AM with an initial luminosity of 292.96E30.

Operations reported at 8 AM that the Recycler had stashed seven times during the last 12 hours.

Operations established beam to MTest at 8:09 AM.

The Plans for Monday

The plans for today are to stack, stash, and store.
