Accelerator Update for September 5, 2008 - September 8, 2008

 

Friday Sept 5

The day shift began with Operations monitoring the Tevatron (TeV) store 6403 (107.04E30), the Recycler (RR) stash (81.4E10), and the Antiproton Source (Pbar) stack (31.8E10), with Pbar off due to work on a power supply for the Lithium Lens, with the Linac, Booster, and the Main Injector (MI) operating normally, with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and DZero (D0) using the colliding beams, and with the MiniBooNE, NuMI, and the Meson MTest experiments taking beam.

RF experts reported at 8:47 AM that they had replaced a bad fan for a Booster RF station (BRF17).

A Pbar expert reported at 10:38 AM that he was changing the filter for a quadrupole power supply (I:QF12).

At 11:06 AM, BRF16 tripped off. It reset.

The Neutron Therapy Facility reported at 11:07 AM that they had completed treatment for their last patient of the day.

At 12:48 PM, LRF4 tripped off. It reset.

RF experts brought BRF10 online at 2:17 PM.

Power supply experts reported that they had completed their work on the Pbar Lithium Lens. Pbar began stacking at 3:11 PM.

TeV experts reported at 3:18 PM that they had changed the interaction points for D0 and CDF.

Operations reported at 3:59 PM that the Recycler had stashed antiprotons once during the day shift.

At 3:59 PM, MIRF6 tripped off and took down the NuMI beam permit. Everything reset.

At 4:16 PM, MIRF6 tripped off. It reset.

Operations disabled the MTest beam at 6:24 PM.

At 6:49 PM, NuMI tripped off for the first of two times in 47 minutes due to MIRF6 trips. Everything reset.

At 8:27 PM, NuMI again tripped off due to MIRF6. Operators bypassed the station.

At 9:17 PM, Operations reported that the Pelletron VME was not responding. Operations called in an expert.

A controls expert reported at 10:15 PM that he reestablished communication between the Pelletron VME and ACCELNET.

At 10:37 PM, a Linac Klystron RF station (KRF6) tripped off. It reset.

At 11:01 PM, BRF16 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 11:56 PM that the Recycler had stashed four times during the evening shift.

Saturday Sept 6

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6403 (42.55E30) and the stash (286.7E10), with the Pbar stacking (15.7E10), and with the MiniBooNE and NuMI experiments taking beam.

At 2:25 AM, BRF16 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:56 AM, BRF8 tripped off. It reset.

Operations terminated store 6403 at 3:23 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 3:35 AM.

Operations established store 6404 at 5:12 AM with an initial luminosity of 269.14E30.

At 5:14 AM, LRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations established beam to MTest at 5:50 AM.

Operations reported at 8 AM that the Recycler had stashed five times during the midnight shift.

Cryo system experts asked operators to check out the wet engine at TeV sector D3. Operators reported at 8:32 AM that the flywheel had a very slight wobble.

At 9:09 AM, a Booster vacuum pump (IPRF17) tripped off and caused BRF7 & 8 to also trip. Everything reset.

At 12:24 PM, LRF2 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:17 PM, LRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 5:55 PM, MIRF8 tripped off and would not reset. Operations called in an expert.

At 6:49 PM, BRF16 tripped off. It reset.

RF experts reported at 7:33 PM that they were changing the modulator for MIRF8.

Operations reported at 8:14 PM that the Recycler had stashed eight times during the last 12 hours.

Operations reported at 8:41 PM that all the MIRF stations were on. Operations resumed sending beam to Pbar and NuMI.

RF experts reported at 9:10 PM that they were changing the modulator for MIRF1.

At 10:02 PM, LRF5 tripped off. It reset.

At 10:34 PM, Operations reported that MIRF was still having problems. MI beam intensity was down. RF experts investigated.

At 10:54 PM, Operations reported problems with MIRF12.

At 11:05 PM, BRF16 tripped off. It reset.

Sunday Sept 7

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6404 and the stash, with Pbar stacking, and with the MiniBooNE and NuMI experiments taking beam.

Operations terminated store 6404 at 12:04 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 12:15 AM.

Operations established store 6405 at 1:54 AM with an initial luminosity of 260.24E30.

At 4:04 AM, LRF5 tripped off. It reset.

At 4:17 AM, LRF4 tripped off. It reset.

Operations established beam to MTest at 4:36 AM.

Operations reported at 7:58 AM that the Recycler had stashed five times during the last 12 hours.

Operations reported at 9:20 AM that they were able to raise the intensity of the NuMI beam.

At 10:18 AM, a Booster vacuum pump (IPRF17) tripped off and caused BRF7 & 8 to also trip. Everything reset.

At 1:14 PM, a Booster quadrupole power supply ((B:Q801) tripped off and would not reset. Operations called in some power supply experts.

At 1:28 PM, LRF4 tripped off. It reset.

At 3:24 PM, a Booster vacuum pump tripped off. It reset.

Power supply experts reported at 3:24 PM that they had replaced a bad relay for B:Q801.

At 3:30 PM, LRF5 tripped off for the first of three times in one minute. It reset.

At 4:05 PM, MIRF5 tripped off. It reset.

At 5:45 PM, a Booster power supply (B:SEXSB) tripped off. It reset, but operators noted that its rack fan had stopped working.

At 5:55 PM, BRF8 tripped off. It reset.

Operations disabled the MTest beam at 6:07 PM.

Operations terminated store 6405 at 6:34 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 6:47 PM.

Operations reported at 7:59 PM that the Recycler had stashed six times during the last 12 hours.

Operations established store 6406 at 8:29 PM with an initial luminosity of 254.11E30.

At 8:57 PM, BRF8 tripped off. It reset.

At 10:36 PM, BRF16 tripped off for the first of two times in 14 minutes. It reset.

At 11:44 PM, a Pbar Debuncher RF station (DRF1-6) tripped off. Operators investigated.

Monday Sept 8

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6406 and the stash, with the Pbar stacking, and with the MiniBooNE and NuMI experiments taking beam.

Operators reported at 12:14 AM that DRF1-6 had a bad power supply. Operations contacted an expert.

Operations reported at 1:22 AM that a Pbar expert said that since stacking was still good, they would wait and repair the power supply for DRF6-1 in the morning.

Operations established beam to MTest at 4:30 AM.

Operations reported at 7:58 AM that the Recycler had stashed nine times during the last 12 hours.

At 5:47 AM, BRF16 tripped off twice in 18 minutes. It reset.

The Plans for Monday

The plans for today are to stack, stash, and store.
