Accelerator Update for September 10, 2008 - September 12, 2008

Wednesday Sept 10

The day shift began with Operations monitoring the Tevatron (TeV) store 6411 (163.0E30), the Recycler (RR) stash (75.8E10), and the Antiproton Source (Pbar) stack (32.0E10), with no beam in the Linac, Booster, and the Main Injector (MI) or to the MiniBooNE, NuMI, and the Meson MTest experiments due to a Kautz Road substation trip, and with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and DZero (D0) using the colliding beams.

A Linac expert reported that a Klystron RF station (KRF7) developed an internal LCW leak. He and another expert repaired the leak and began drying out the cabinet and its wet components.

A Pbar expert began a stacktail Delta Kicker measurement at 9:21 AM.

An instrumentation expert reported at 10 AM that he was rebooting the MI flying wire.

At 10:26 AM, a Linac RF station (LRF3) tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 11:21 AM that the Kautz Road substation work ended as well as the KRF7 work.

Operations resumed sending beam to MiniBooNE and NuMI by 11:55 AM.

At 12:02 PM, a Booster vacuum pump (IP61) tripped off. It reset.

At 12:23 PM, KRF7 tripped off and would not reset. A Linac expert responded.

At 12:50 PM, KRF2 tripped off. It reset.

Operations loaded an energy conservation time line into the Time Line Generator at 12:53 PM.

A Linac expert reported at 2:12 PM that the problem with KRF7 was due to a failed limiting resistor wire used for the SCRs. Below is a picture of the wire.

Operations reported at 3:58 PM that the Recycler had stashed antiprotons once during the day shift.

At 4:02 PM, Linac experts reported that KRF7 had SCR damage.

At 4:43 PM, a Booster vacuum pump (IPRF23) tripped off and caused two RF stations to trip off. Everything reset.

Operations reported at 7:14 PM that Linac experts brought KRF7 back online and resumed sending beam to NuMI and MiniBooNE.

Operations reported at 11:52 PM that the Recycler had stashed three times during the evening shift.

Thursday Sept 11

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6411 (57.23E30) and the stash (199.7E10), with the Pbar stacking (31.8E10), and with the MiniBooNE and NuMI experiments taking beam.

At 12:58 AM, KRF5 tripped off. It reset.

Operations established beam to MTest at 4:02 AM.

At 5:04 AM, the P1 transfer line tripped off due to a sag in the output current of a power supply (I:HI701). Everything reset.

At 6:35 AM, a Booster vacuum pump (IPRF17) tripped off and caused BRF7 and 8 to also trip off. Everything reset.

Operations terminated store 6411 at 7:03 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 7:19 AM.

At 7:45 AM, LRF3 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 7:54 AM that the Recycler had stashed six times during the midnight shift.

At 9:18 AM, KRF7 tripped off due to a “frequency out of range” indication. Operations contacted a Linac expert who had the station back on within 13 minutes.

Operations established store 6412 at 9:54 AM with an initial luminosity of 287.0E30.

Booster and MI experts began coalescing studies at 10:15 AM.

At 10:51 AM, Operations reported that the antiproton stacking production had dropped due to problems with an autotune program and the AP2 BPMs. Experts investigated and made adjustments.

Experts ended the coalescing studies at 11:34 AM.

At 11:42 AM, Operations reported that MIRF2 problems had caused NuMI to trip off a couple of times. RF experts investigated.

At 1:44 PM, BRF18 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 6:04 PM that the Recycler had stashed four times during the day shift.

Operations disabled the MTest beam at 6:22 PM.

At 8:25 PM, LRF5 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at midnight that the Recycler had stashed six times during the evening shift.

Friday Sept 12

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6412 (71.98E30) and the stash (325.5E10), with Pbar stacking (17.7E10), and with the MiniBooNE and NuMI experiments taking beam.

At 1:54 AM, BRF7 tripped off. Operators investigated and reported that its modulator had failed. Operators bypassed the station and brought up BRF19 in its place.

Operations terminated store 6412 at 3:17 AM.

Operators brought TRF8 back online at 3:33 AM.

Operations also put the TeV into shot setup at 3:33 AM.

Operations established store 6413 at 5:02 AM with an initial luminosity of 300.34E30.

Operations established beam to MTest around 5:47 AM.

At 6:51 AM, the NuMI beam permit tripped off due to a power supply (E:QF115) current sag. Everything reset.

At 7:41 AM, LRF4 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 8 AM that the Recycler had stashed five times during the midnight shift.
