Accelerator Update for October 27, 2008 - October 29, 2008

Monday Oct 27

The day shift began with Operations monitoring the Recycler stash (94.8E10) and the Antiproton Source (Pbar) stack (18.9E10), with the Linac down to repair a Klystron RF station (KRF7), with Booster and the Main Injector (MI) waiting for Linac, with the MiniBooNE, NuMI, and Meson MTest experiments waiting for beam, and with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) and D-Zero (D0) waiting for the next store.

Linac experts repaired KRF7 and Linac resumed sending beam at 8:32 AM.

At 8:37 AM, KRF7 tripped off for the first of three times in 31 minutes. Linac experts investigated.

At 9:20 AM, Operations reported that the BLMs in the P2 transfer line were not working. Experts reported that there was a high voltage failure in the tunnel.

Linac experts reported at 9:49 AM that KRF7 was back online and Linac resumed sending beam.

Operations prepared the Tevatron (TeV) F- sector and CDF for access at 10:37 AM.

Linac experts reported at 10:54 AM that they were turning off KRF7 to replace its ignitron.

At 11:45 AM, Operations reported that the MI RF system tripped off due to a drop in temperature of the 95 LCW system. An expert investigated and reported the temperature was 83 degrees F; it should be at 92.6 degrees F. An RF expert turned on some MI RF stations.

A Linac expert reported that KRF7 was back on line at 12:13 PM.

Instrumentation experts reported at 1:18 PM that they found a small LCW leak dripping on to a BLM and its splashing had caused the high voltage fault. Since the leak would take some time to repair, it was diverted away. The leak will be repaired later.

The TeV F-sector access ended at 1:20 PM.

Operations established beam to Pbar, NuMI, and MiniBooNE around 1:41 PM.

Operations established beam to MTest at 1:47 PM.

CDF came out of access around 1:50 PM.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 2:44 PM.

Operations put the TeV through a wet squeeze at 3:39 PM.

Operations reported at 3:58 PM that the Recycler had stashed antiprotons two times during the day shift.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 4:28 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 4:57 PM.

Operations established store 6521 at 6:29 PM with an initial luminosity of 154.8E30.

Operations reported at midnight that the Recycler had stashed six times during the evening shift.

Tuesday Oct 28

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6521 (79.97E30) and the stash (151.5E10), with Pbar stacking (27.3E10), and with the MiniBooNE and NuMI experiments taking beam.

At 12:24 AM, BRF19 tripped off. It reset.

At 12:32 AM, LRF5 tripped off. It reset.

At 2:29 AM, LRF2 tripped off for the first of three times in 12 minutes. It reset.

At 5:02 AM, BRF9 tripped off. It reset.

Operations reported at 8:02 AM that the Recycler had stashed eight times during the midnight shift.

At 8:48 AM, Operations reported that BRF19 had tripped off several times. An RF expert reported that the station needed its bias power supply replaced.

At 9:30 AM, Operations reported that MI was suffering from intermittent beam fallout. Experts investigated.

Operations prepared the Pelletron for access at 10:32 AM.

At 10:34 AM, the Pelletron tripped off. Experts investigated.

Operations terminated store 6521 at 10:36 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup around 12:21 PM.

At 1:05 PM, the TeV suffered a sector D1 quench. Operators investigated.

Operations reported at 1:10 PM that a TeV power supply (VD18) had jumped to a bad value.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 2:53 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 3:21 PM.

At 4:46 PM, the TeV suffered a sector A4 quench. Experts investigated.

Operations put the TeV through a dry squeeze at 9:03 PM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 9:32 PM.

Operations established store 6527 at 10:43 PM with an initial luminosity of 71.85E30.

At 11:17 PM, BRF11 tripped off for the first of two times in 15 minutes.

Wednesday Oct 29

The midnight shift began with Operations monitoring store 6527 (56.05E30) and the stash (157.4E10), with Pbar stacking (26.2E10), and with the MiniBooNE and NuMI experiments taking beam.

At 12:28 AM, BRF11 tripped off for the first of three times in 80 minutes. It reset.

Operations terminated store 6527 at 6:33 AM.

Operations put the TeV into shot setup at 6:50 AM.

Operations reported at 7:54 AM that the Recycler had stashed once during the midnight shift.

The Plans for Wednesday

The plans for today are to establish a new store and then allow Pbar experts to conduct studies that will last most of the day. Linac experts will conduct a LRF5 study.
