CryptoCard end of life Oct. 11
On Oct. 11, the Kerberos domain controller software will be upgraded to enable computers to authenticate to Fermilab Kerberos-protected systems in the FNAL.GOV realm. As a result, CryptoCards will be replaced by a new method of authentication, RSA SecurID. If you currently use a CryptoCard, please email the Authentication Services group at auth@fnal.gov with a brief description of how and why you use your card so the group may assist you in transitioning to using RSASecurID. Mac users should not upgrade to OS X 10.10 (Yosemite). Yosemite has not yet been certified for use at Fermilab, and the OS does not work with our current Kerberos software and will not yet work with the new version.

Success & Failure in Engineering - A Paradoxical Relationship - Fermilab Lecture Series - Oct. 24
Engineering is about making and doing things that have not been done before. To be successful, it is essential that engineers properly anticipate how things can fail, and design accordingly. Case studies of past failures thus provide invaluable information for the design of future successes. Conversely, designs based on the extrapolation of successful experience alone can lead to failure. This paradox will be explored in the context of historical case studies. Dr. Henry Petroski is a professor of history and engineering at Duke. His latest book is The House with Sixteen Handmade Doors. His work has been featured in many publications. Tickets - $7 - call 630/840.ARTS or www.fnal.gov/culture.
