National Geographic's Spencer Wells Speaks at Fermilab's Colloquium Today
|
Spencer Wells |
Spencer Wells, of the National Geographic Society, will present "The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey" in One West at 4:00 p.m. today. As a geneticist with a flare for anthropology, Wells focuses on how modern humans came to populate the planet. According to National Geographic, Wells and his colleagues analyzed the DNA of thousands of men living in isolated tribes around the world and discovered that all humans today can be traced back to a small tribe that lived in Africa 60,000 years ago.
Wells is the first of two colloquia speakers who
will focus on genetics and the origins of modern man. On March 17, Ajit Varki, of the University of California - San Diego will present, "Genetic Differences Between Great Apes and Humans: Implications for Human Evolution." Focusing specifically on Chimpanzees and Bonobos, Varki analyzes differences between apes and humans.

St. Andrews Golf League Has Openings
|
|
(Left to Right) Dave Bulmahn, Mike Matulik,
Patrick Liston and Bob Johnson have been playing as a team on the St.
Andrews Golf League for over ten years. They finished the 2003 golf season
in first place. (Click on image for larger version.) |
|
It is not too early to think about the upcoming golf season!
For the first time in many years, the St. Andrews Wednesday
Golf League has openings for regular golfers and for golfers
wishing to substitute. The St. Andrews league plays
every Wednesday evening with scheduled tee
times starting from 4:30 p.m. The league begins play on
April 21 with an informal "fun night" and begins competitive
play the following week on April 28th. The season lasts
until August 18th and there is an "all league"
final outing a few weeks after.
The league is co-ed and handicapped/90%.
The cost to join the league is $20.00, and green fees are $20.00 for a
twilight rate. Form your own team or sign up individually.
To sign up or for more information,
contact Patrick Liston x2332 or Mike Matulik x4091.
You must be a Fermilab employee, retiree, visitor,
student or contractor to join a Fermilab Golf league.

From Scientific American, February 18, 2004
Newly Discovered Galaxy Is a Record-Breaker
Astronomers have detected a galaxy located 13 billion light-years from Earth, making it the most distant such object on record. The find, described in a paper to be published in the Astrophysical Journal, should help scientists better understand the so-called cosmic Dark Ages, when the universe’s first galaxies and quasars transformed opaque hydrogen into the transparent cosmos that exists today.

Nobel Laureate Lederman to speak at MSU
Leon M. Lederman, winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize for physics, will speak at Michigan State University on Thursday, Feb. 26.
Lederman’s talk is at 4:10 p.m. in Room 1410 of the MSU Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building. His talk, titled “It’s time for 21st Century Science Education,” will focus on the state of science education today, a problem he defines as a “prescription for disaster.”

DZero Collaboration as of 2001 (Click on image for larger version.) |
This week Fermilab is playing host to a DZero Collaboration
Meeting. Four times a year, week-long meetings are scheduled
to allow the entire 700-member collaboration to get together
and get up to date on the status of the detector and its upgrades,
the data, the computing, software and analysis, which together
allow them to extract physics observations from the Tevatron's
collisions. During this week's meeting, the collaboration has
scheduled three full days (starting last Sunday) of
presentations of physics analyses in progress. Many new
and interesting results are being shown here for the first time,
as a prelude to the spring physics conferences. Meetings
like this allow the experiment to collectively discuss
serious issues and set priorities and goals. They are also an
opportunity to catch up with old colleagues and meet new ones.
To ensure that this happens, the spokespersons traditionally
buy the whole collaboration beer in the Users Center on
Wednesday evening!
