Girl Scouts Spend a Saturday Learning About Science
Girl Scout Workshop

Last Saturday, over 500 Girl Scouts from Will, McHenry, Kane and Kendall counties gathered at Joliet Junior College to learn about science, math and law enforcement. Thirty-six volunteers, nine of which were from Fermilab, helped teach Brownie, Junior and Cadette Girl Scouts about math and science through hands-on activities.

"Including all of the girls, chaperones and volunteers, we had over 850 people," said Anne Lucietto, an engineer in FESS/Ops-Engineering and technical volunteer coordinator for the event. "Our volunteers were fantastic and I've heard nothing but good things from the girls."

Girl Scouts in grades 1-9 earned Try-Its, badges, and special interest patches by attending different activities. The Girl Scouts also participated in several community service projects; younger girls made paper butterflies destined for U.S. soldiers abroad and older girls assisted with the event.

Severe weather, Skilling share Fermilab stage
by Eric Schelkopf
Last May, 516 tornadoes blew across the United States, a record for the month.

And Illinois is not immune from dangerous weather, WGN-TV meteorologist Tom Skilling reminded the crowd that packed Fermilab's Ramsey Auditorium on Saturday, as he talked about the 1967 Oak Lawn tornado and 1990 Plainfield tornado.

"You live in fear in this business when that sort of outbreak will occur again," Skilling said. This is the 24th year that Skilling has sponsored his tornado and severe storm seminar.

Join QuarkNet; Win the NCAA Basketball Tournament
Minnesota
Last week Fermilab Today reported on Fermilab institutions from CDF and DZero that made it to the men's NCAA Division I basketball tournament. Sports fans in Fermilab's Education Office also followed the games. It seems that there is a statistically significant correlation between universities with QuarkNet centers and universities with basketball tournament teams. This year 13 men's and 17 women's teams made the trip. Staff have been gathering data over the life of QuarkNet and report that a high number of women's teams make it to the Sweet Sixteen and a high number of men's teams make it to the Elite Eight. Kansas was this year's QuarkNet representative in the Men's Elite Eight. Minnesota, Notre Dame, Purdue, Stanford and Vanderbilt represented QuarkNet in the Women's Sweet Sixteen. Minnesota made it to the Women's Final Four.

While QuarkNet currently claims a correlation, they are considering a claim of cause and effect! For full stats, contact Spencer Pasero.

Our Readers Respond
Jeff Nelson, of Fermilab's MINOS experiment, on our April 2 "Duke Carries CDF Hopes to NCAA Final Four" story:
While not one of the big boys, MINOS was in the NCAA basketball tournament too. We had 5 schools and a 6-5 record. It would have been better if Stanford, our resident #1 seed, hadn't lost so early.
