FESS Replaces Fire Hydrant Next to the Reflecting Pond this Week
|
|
FESS replaced a fire hydrant on the west side
of the Reflecting Pond yesterday. (Click on image for larger version.) |
|
As you drove into the lab on Monday morning, you probably noticed an excavation
project taking place in the Reflecting Pond in front of Wilson Hall. Steve
Shirley of FESS reported that due to a leak, FESS replaced a fire hydrant
on the west side of the Reflecting Pond. Because the base of the fire hydrant
is lower than the regular water level in the pond, FESS workers had to first drain
the pond on Saturday before excavating the area.
Eric Mieland of ES&H explained that the excavation project will not have a
negative environmental impact on the pond.
"Because of the cold weather this past winter, there were only a few, small
fish in the Reflecting Pond," Mieland said. "The pond is fairly shallow, and
the ice cover was thicker this past winter due to an extended cold snap. Thick
ice reduces the volume of water in the pond and it can cause the amounts of
dissolved oxygen to drop below levels at which fish can survive. This
phenomenon occurs occasionally. It made the local papers this spring when
some fish were also killed in the Fox River." The pond will naturally
repopulate. Birds will help by dropping fish eggs in the pond.
Work is expected to continue in the Reflecting Pond
through the end of the week.
Parking will remain roped off in the areas where
work is being conducted until the project is completed.

Online Medical Scheduler Now Available
|
|
Fermilab's Medical Office now has an online scheduling program. (Click on image for larger version.) |
|
The Medical Department is in the process of implementing an online scheduling
program for routine Health Risk Assessments. Currently, when someone is coming
due for an exam, they are sent an email reminder. The enclosed message
asks the worker to have their supervisor update their Work Activities
Analysis Form, and then schedule an appointment by calling the Medical
Department. The new process replaces the phone call with a pick list
calendar of available dates and times. The email reminder contains a
link to the pick list calendar, which only becomes active once the
WAAF has been updated.
The Medical Department asks for your cooperation and patience during
the start up phase of
this new system. Similar applications, such as blood donation, have worked
well in the past. The programming for the
HRA scheduler, however, is more complex, and it is therefore more prone
to difficulties.
If you are unable to make the online scheduler work for you, please set
up your appointment as before by calling the Medical Department at x3232.
At that time, the Medical Department would appreciate your feedback
regarding the nature of
the difficulty you encountered so that they can try to fix it.

`Walden'?
The stunt that became a myth
150 years later, scholars such as Elizabeth Hall Witherell help us
recognize Thoreau as a profound storyteller
....While universally hailed as a classic, "Walden" has suffered the fate
of many a famous book: It's more read about than read, with more copies
purchased than perused. "I've always said that `Walden' and Stephen Hawking's
work are probably the most cited -- and least read -- works in the 20th Century,"
says Elizabeth Witherell. She may know Hawking almost as well as she knows Thoreau, because
her husband, Michael Witherell, is director of Fermilab, the high-energy physics
facility in Batavia, Ill.

Good Morning!

The annual shutdown is only two weeks away, and I would like to talk
to you about safety.
The maintenance and installation work being done during the shutdown
will be the foundation of the accelerator performance over the next year.
Nothing that we are doing, however, is more important than getting the work
done safely.
Many people will be working in new areas, with new people, doing new tasks.
If you are one of those people, make sure you understand the job and the
hazard analysis. If you are not comfortable, ask questions. Be responsible
for your own safety and the safety of those who work with you.
Your safety is important to you, your family, and all of us here at Fermilab.
