Oshinowo Elected to Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference Executive Committee
Babatunde O'Sheg Oshinowo of PPD's Alignment and Metrology group will serve on the executive committee of the 2005 Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference in Austin, Texas. Elected by about 400 attendees at this year's conference in San Jose, California, Oshinowo will organize seminars for the upcoming CMSC.

"As Seminars and Workshops Coordinator, I have to choose seminar leaders and review their presentations," said Oshinowo, who has worked in the Metrology and Alignment Group for 11 years. The conferences attract metrologists from the airplane and car industries as well as research labs. Workshops and colloquia presentations discuss precision measuring devices like electronic theodolites, laser trackers, laser radar and photogrammetric systems. In July, Oshinowo gave a presentation on how laser trackers and videogrammetric cameras will be used to align the BTeV detector at CZero.

"Fermilab uses all metrological devices except scanning devices, which measure 3D objects instead of discrete points," said Oshinowo, who oversaw the alignment of Fermilab's NuTeV, DZero Detector, Recycler Ring, and MiniBooNE and is currently managing the alignment of the Booster Accelerator, Recycler Electron Cooling and BTeV Detector.

"Basically, the conference is a show-and-tell of measuring devices and methods," Oshinowo said. "It was quite a privilege to be nominated and elected by my peers." He is also a member of the organizing committee for the 8th International Workshop on Accelerator Alignment at CERN.

Science community unites for £3bn tunnel to recreate the Big Bang
By Roger Highfield
A £3 billion plan to build a 25-mile tunnel in which subatomic particles are smashed together to recreate the Big Bang and unlock other mysteries of the cosmos has received a major boost from the international scientific community.

The Linear Accelerator is one of the next generation of particle physics experiments that are so huge, so ambitious and so costly that no single nation can afford them.

40km tunnel will try to unravel secrets of universe
By Steve Connor
Details of a giant machine for discovering the secrets of the universe were revealed yesterday by scientists who believe the massive device could revolutionise how we understand the cosmos.

An international panel of particle physicists has decided that the high-energy linear collider - a £3bn machine for smashing matter against antimatter - will use revolutionary superconducting technology to shed light on the origin and nature of the universe.

Director's Corner
Good Morning!
Mike Witherell
Mike Witherell
The Annual Shutdown is upon us. The end of operations for fiscal year 2004 came at 4:00 am Monday when the last Tevatron store was terminated. The laboratory now enters a three-month period of intense activity in the tunnels, including renewal of the accelerator complex and installation of upgrades.

Some of the highlights for this shutdown are installation of the electron cooling apparatus into the Recycler, final installation of the NuMI beam line, and replacement of the focusing horn for MiniBooNE. The total accelerator effort requires about 160 people, including 124 mechanical technicians. Additional work will be done at the experiments.

The detailed scheduling of people, space, and hardware is an intricate and demanding task. The planning for this shutdown has been going on for the last year, but was especially intense for the last two months. People will still need to react as surprises inevitably occur over the course of the shutdown.

I want to reinforce Roger Dixon's message delivered last week: "The most important thing is having a very safe and effective shutdown. We don't want any of you getting hurt."

Accelerator Update
August 20 - August 23
- During this 72-hour period Operations established two stores that contributed approximately 24 hours of beam to the experiments
- TeV experts reported that the ground fault disappeared
- Operations established store 3744 on Saturday night and store 3745 on Sunday afternoon
- Nearly all of the machines conducted studies
- The TeV turned off at 4:00 a.m.
- Fermilab began its 13-week shutdown at 7:00 a.m.
