Barry Barish to lead International Linear Collider design
At the Linear Collider Workshop held at Stanford University, the International
Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA) on Friday, March 18, announced the

appointment of Professor Barry Barish as Director of the Global Design Effort
for the proposed International Linear Collider. Barish is Linde Professor of
Physics at the California Institute of Technology and is currently director of
the LIGO laboratory.
"I am thrilled to accept this challenge and I am poised to move us forward
energetically toward a global design for the linear collider." said Barish.
"Particle physics is a vibrant field entering into a period of profound discoveries. Within the last few years our concept of the universe has radically changed, and these new questions can yield to the accelerator technology that is available to us. The evidence pointing to the scientific richness of the energy regime that would be explored by the linear collider, combined with the technological advances that have made such a machine technically possible, provide an extraordinary platform upon which to undertake the next step. Berkeley Lab Throws Going Away Party for Pier Oddone

Berkeley Lab employees are invited to say "goodbye" and "good luck" to Pier Oddone,
the LBL's long-time Deputy Director, who is leaving to become the fifth
Director of Fermilab in Illinois.
A celebration of his contributions has been scheduled for Thursday,
March 24, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Berkeley Lab Cafeteria. Refreshments
and music will accompany a brief program, which will include remarks
from the honored guest.

Giant space-time ripples may cause cosmic expansion

Dark energy is not necessary to explain the accelerating expansion of the universe observed by astronomers, suggest controversial new calculations. Instead, gigantic ripples in space-time - larger than the observable universe - may be the cause.

Ten years ago this month the CDF and DZero collaborations jointly announced
the discovery of the top quark. This was the final step in a worldwide search
that started when its partner, the bottom quark, was discovered here in 1977.
If you are interested in reading more about both of those discoveries you can
do so online.
As we celebrate its tenth birthday, top quark physics is going through a period
of rapid growth. The precise measurement of the top quark mass is used to predict
the mass of the Higgs boson in the standard model. Theoretical physicists try
to explain why the top quark is so heavy, and whether its great mass reveals
something special about all of the quark masses.
The Tevatron now produces as many top quarks in six weeks as it did in all of
its operation before 2001. We will be hearing a lot more from CDF and DZero
about the top quark later this year and for many years to come.

March PC Manager Meeting
The March PC Manager Meeting will be on March 23 from

elevate privileges only when you need them!
Building Better Bones
Back by popular demand, Building Better Bones will be offered
on March 23 at noon Curia-II.
A brief lecture on Osteoporosis will be followed by a free
bone scan for any woman attending the lecture. Jody Springsteen, BSN, CRRN
covers osteoporosis risk factors, diagnosis and prevention.
Calling All NCAA Basketball Fans
Last year, Fermilab Today ran an article about the results of the
NCAA basketball tournament among experiment collaborations, and we plan to do the same
thing this year. After the championship game, Fermilab Today
invites collaborators to send their results to
Eric Bland.
Scottish Country Dancing
Scottish Country Dancing has moved back to the
Kuhn Barn on the Fermilab site and will meet there on
Tuesday, March 22. Instruction begins at 7:30 p.m. Most dances are
fully taught and walked through, and you do not need to come with a partner.
