DOE Secretary Bodman addresses basic missions

To stay strong and competitive, America needs to find energy solutions, push the boundaries of basic scientific research and find ways to reduce the risk of terrorism.
"I see our collective mission to discover the solutions to power and secure America's future," said U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman. "In the history of our department, this mission has never been as vital as it is right now."
Bodman outlined what he views as the mission of all of the DOE laboratories in a talk broadcast from Washington Thursday.
In a global economy, America's prosperity and health are tied to the success of other nations. DOE laboratories have a unique ability to fuel economic development across the globe that does not harm the world-wide environment American security.
Three fundamental approaches, Bodman said, provide the economic engines for that growth: meeting U.S. and foreign energy needs in a clean, sustainable fashion, maintaining the nation's nuclear stockpile and pushing back the frontiers of science.
Bodman called scientific research the building blocks of America's future and its global competitiveness. America's economy historically has sprung from the country's ability to innovate, discover and create. This ingenuity often has led to the creation of new industries and increased efficiency in old ones.
These scientific advances improve our health, increase our nation's safety, increase convenience and make our lives more comfortable, he said.
While some scientific goals such as finding alternative fuel sources are obvious and pressing, other discoveries are less evident and more long-term but equally important, he added.

Kennedy's Kitchen performs at Fermilab Saturday
Kennedy's Kitchen, an Irish folk band, will perform at Fermilab's Ramsey Auditorium Saturday.
Like an experienced chef, the members of Kennedy's Kitchen don't follow a recipe.
Still, the five-member music group, which uses time-tested tunes, tall tales and various musical ingredients, hopes to cook up a good time Saturday when they play for a crowd at Fermilab's Ramsey Auditorium.
Using a fiddle, whistles, banjo, bouzouki, guitars, bodhran, harmonica and bass, the South Bend, Indiana-based group has created both modern and traditional Irish music since 1998. The group's performances, which have been described as both toe-tapping and sentimental, contain stories, jokes and well-embellished tales.
Kennedy's Kitchen has played the Krannert Center at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and The Shaheen Music Series at Saint Mary College. In 2006, they shared billing with Tommy Makem at the DeBartollo Performing Arts Center at the University of Notre Dame. The Kitchen is a regular performer at region's premier venues for acoustic and folk music.
The performance will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $17 for adults and $9 for ages 18 and under. For more info or reservations, call 630/840-ARTS (2787) weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. At other times, an answering machine will give you information and a means of placing ticket orders.

Watch start-up of Large Hadron Collider live at Fermilab!

Fermilab plans September 10 "Pajama Party" to witness first beam at LHC
Journalists and guests are invited to witness the start-up of the Large Hadron Collider live and in real time at the LHC Remote Operations Center at the Department of Energy's Fermilab, in Batavia, Illinois in the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 10.
On that date, scientists at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland will attempt for the first time to send a proton beam around the 27-kilometer-long tunnel of the world's most powerful particle accelerator. Live connections between CERN and Fermilab's LHC Remote Operations Center will follow the action in Switzerland as it happens.
Beam will begin circulating at about 9 a.m. local time in Switzerland. Due to the time difference between Geneva and Chicago, first beam will occur at about 2 a.m. Chicago time. To allow journalists and guests to watch LHC first-beam operations as they happen, Fermilab will host a "pajama party" at the laboratory, beginning at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 10.
Fermilab will broadcast a live satellite feed from CERN. Computers in the Remote Operations Center at Fermilab will monitor operations. Scientists from the LHC experiments, CMS and ATLAS, along with accelerator experts, will be on hand to explain first-beam events.

Foreign per diem meal change
Fermilab Accounting will use GSA Foreign Per Diem Breakdown table to make deductions for the foreign travel reimbursement. This is effective as of travel date Aug. 1. Please refer to GSA - FTR Appendix B to
