The passing of a piece of history

On a chilly day in April, Fermilab Director Pier Oddone received a link to Fermilab’s past. Karyl Louwenaar, a former intern in the laboratory’s Public Information Office in 1969, had returned to the laboratory to pass along a historical painting.
The painting, which depicts the Big Woods Church, was given to Louwenaar in 1969 by Ivan Alten, a designer with DUSAF, one of four architectural-engineering firms that worked together on the laboratory’s construction from 1967 until the early 1970s.
While the Big Woods Church, which is located on Eola Road south of the laboratory, has never been on the laboratory site the church does hold historical significance to the people who once lived on the land that is now Fermilab. Louwenaar was working on recording the history of the land’s former occupants during her internship in 1969.
Fermilab Chief Operations Officer Bruce Chrisman gave the painting to members of the church at the 14th annual Farmer’s Picnic on Saturday, May 7, a fitting venue. The annual potluck-style celebration usually attracts about 100 guests, most of whose family farms used to occupy the Fermilab site. Approximately 140 people attended the picnic this year, including several first-time attendees who received tours of the former homesteads from Roads and Grounds’ Bob Lootens.

New Physics Advisory Committee members named
Earlier this month, Fermilab Director Pier Oddone appointed the following new members of the Fermilab Physics Advisory Committee (PAC):
- Daniela Bortoletto, Purdue University
- Roger Blandford, Stanford University
- Chip Brock, Michigan State University
- Jeff Harvey, University of Chicago
Their terms will begin with the June PAC meeting, which will take place this year in Snowmass, CO.
The new members will replace the outgoing members whose terms end with the June meeting. Outgoing members include:
- John Carlstrom, University of Chicago
- JoAnne Hewett, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory
- Ian Shipsey, Purdue University
- Rick Van Kooten, Indiana University

So you shoot people in the face...

“So you shoot people in the face with a cyclotron… AWESOME!” a friend of mine declared matter-of-factly. They had conveniently gleaned over the part where I explained the science behind proton therapy. Although they hadn’t quite got the intricacies of the science correct, they had understood the underlying message; that I have the coolest job in the world. I’m an engineering undergrad who packed up his stuff, got on a plane in Montreal and headed to Vancouver for a summer job at TRIUMF: Canada’s National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics. It’s only been about a week, but I already feel right at home.

Celebrate Employee Health & Fitness Day

Death
Lisa Rogers, an employee in the DOE Fermi Site Office died on Thursday, May 12. She was 47. Visitation for Rogers will take place from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, May 20 at the New Horizon Christian Fellowship, located at 3577 East New York St., in Aurora. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 21. Viewing will take place from 10-11 a.m. and a service will begin at 11 a.m. at Greater Mount Olive Church of God and Christ, 1039 Bonner Ave., Aurora. A gathering will follow the service at River Run Club House, 4204 Clearwater Lane in Naperville. An In Memoriam will appear in Fermilab Today later this week.
