Minutes of Aug 21 PASREC Meeting

Attendees - IG, JK, EB, PC, QL, HG, GW, RK, FC

Further discussions of the final September 1 report.

Qizhong suggested that we might want to experiment with one of the commercial products for 6 months. But Irwin said that in practice the experimenters do not want an interim. In six months they will be irretrievably committed to whatever product is chosen.

We discussed the use of commercial products. Eileen brought up the idea of trying them out using the sample licenses from MATLAB and IDL. Rob expressed doubt that we could discover enough in one month to make a decision. Jeff will present a demo on Tuesday.

Rob stated that ROOT would require the least work to move from the existing (PAW) model. Gordon asked to rephrase that to read "least paradigm shift…" It is agreed that all of the functionality necessary is avialable, for off-line needs. Everyone agrees that cint is the weakest part. It was generally agreed that there are two courses of action, to either replace it altogether, or to specify a target configuration for the product and bring it to that state. Implementation of a commercial front end (edg) would take about two years.

Gordon said that the draft document from Tuesday is too optimistic wrt to and too pessimistic wrt Histoscope.

Gordon suggested the following modifications to the proposal:

ROOT

Nirvana

Commercial
