Simulation
This element includes the software needed to simulate the production of high
energy collisions and the detector responses. The software will include
several standard event generators and will provide detailed feedback to the
user on the performance of the detector, by statistical or graphical (event
display) methods. The software provides a framework for producing simulated
data samples for trigger studies and subsequent event reconstruction which are
an important part of the preparations for RunII.
This project will include
- Support of existing event generators, such as QQ, Herwig or ISAJET,
common interfaces (e.g., a la "STDHEP") between these event generators and the
detector packages (or other analysis tools).
- Support of the existing GEANT3 framework, including some upgrades that
would be judged absolutely necessary to get correct simulation of the detector
responses.
- Modest effort in the development of the GEANT4 package, and also in
monitoring its evolution for possible later use. (GEANT3 is a FORTRAN77
PACKAGE, dating back to the beginning of the LEP era, while GEANT4 is LHC++
project.)
- Support for migration from GEANT3 to GEANT4 and support for the GEANT4
product.
- Continuing development and support of the MCFast parametric Monte-Carlo.
Ongoing. This project provides targetted CDF and D0 Run II support
as part of an ongoing effort in the Computing Division.
