What are the conditions for registration?

Applicants must be 18 years old or older and be able to present a REAL ID-compliant identification. Fermilab employees, users and subcontractors, as well as their family members, are not eligible to register. For more information, review the Fermilab Photowalk Terms and Conditions.

During the event

What will happen during the Photowalk?

Fermilab's Photowalk is by invitation only on Saturday, July 26, 2025. At this event, photographers will visit five locations during a four-hour tour. Photographers will have approximately 20 minutes to set up equipment and capture photos at each location. Scientists and tour guides will be nearby to answer any questions during the tour.

Do I need to bring my own PPE?

Participants are required to wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants and closed-toed shoes. Failure to wear the appropriate clothing will restrict photographers' ability to participate in the Photowalk. All other necessary PPE, such as hard hats and safety vests, will be provided to the participants to wear by Fermilab as required.

Can I bring photographic equipment?

All types of cameras (including smartphones) are permitted, as well as their lenses, accessories and tripods. Photographers will be required to carry their own equipment. To avoid disrupting other photographers' work, lights and flashes will not be permitted.

Can I take video?

Video recording is not permitted.

What happens if I cannot come to the event?

If you are selected and unable to attend, please contact Fermilab as soon as possible so your place can be reallocated.

After the event

How long do I have before I need to submit photos?

The photo submission deadline is Aug. 10, 2025.

Can I use AI to edit my photos?

Use of generative and removal AI technologies is not permitted. Use of AI for these purposes is grounds for disqualification.

What about copyright on photos taken during the Photowalk?

Participants in the Fermilab Photowalk 2025 hold the copyright to the photos they take during the event. However, to participate in the event, all participants must sign a nonexclusive, worldwide, perpetual, royalty free license and authorization for the United States Department of Energy and others acting on its behalf (including Fermi Forward Discovery Group, LLC as the current management and operating contractor for Fermilab, and any successor contractors) to use their name, likeness and photographs taken during the Fermilab Photowalk 2025. The document will be provided to participants before the event on July 26.

When will we find out the winner?

A Fermilab panel of judges will review the photos, and the results of the local competition will be announced by the end of August 2025. A selection of winning photos will be shared on Fermilab's social media and exhibited at the Fermilab Art Gallery, located on the second floor of Wilson Hall in Batavia. International winners will be announced through the Interactions collaboration's media and featured in Symmetry magazine and the CERN Courier.
